I am running an IBM TP A21p, with W2k. I want to install Linux, probably RedHat, and wonder if it is possible to install in on an external HD. My existing HD is getting a little full, and I don't want to futz around with the partitions on that system. Also I don't expect to use Linux much, just once in a while for special projects and would like to remove the external HD when I don't need to use Linux.
Is this possible? Suicide?

Hmmm, sounds like it may work...maybe check the Linux Hardware Compatibility List.

I believe it should definitely work under the right conditions.
I'm not too sure about USB or Firewire, but I know Linux can boot from an external SCSI drive if your BIOS supports booting from a SCSI card...

Considering its a laptop than SCSI would prolly be out of the question. If the boot kernel doesnt support it then it will be tough. Is is firewire/parrallel (damn that would be slow) usb would even be too slow unless its usb2.
