When I try to connect to internet the dialer seems to behave erratic i.e only once in a while it connects and many occasions it doesn't. when I use kppp it disconnects saying pppd died unexpectedly. Previously I used to get connected but now this doesn't work. I tried using rp3, kppp as well as wvdial. :(

Also please tell me how I can upgrade from KDE 1.1.2 to the latest KDE version with its feature like koffice, Konqueror etc.

I'm not sure about your dial-up problem. Have you made any major changes to your system recently? If so, that could be your problem. Otherwise, I'm really not sure.

About the KDE upgrade with KOffice, head to K Desktop Environment Headquarters (http://www.kde.org/) and download the necessary RPM files that you will need in order to upgrade. You'll have to download the necessary KDE ones, and you'll also have to download the necessary KOffice ones. (They are two seperate programs.)

Then, from there, just install the .rpm file.

Not that I remember but I installed few RPMs like DOSEMU/WINE etc.

Anyway thank you very much.

Greets,

Yes dude I know what your talking about, people told me that it was everything from line noise to aliens causing the erratic dial-up connections and none of the suggestions seemed to work.

But in the end I discovered it be the hard drive, It was a western digital 10GB ~5000rpm.

I don't know if it was the age of the drive or some other as of yet unknown factor but when I put in a new western digital 20GB ~7200 rpm drive everything worked and still works fantastic.

In the end if ya have an old drive replace it with a new one. If anything drives are so cheap even if it doesnt solve your problem at least you have a bigger place to store stuff on a screwey box LOL J/K 8-P

Stay Kewl,

Hi! asymblor,

My dialup problem seems different. I dual boot into Windows and linux. The dialup works fine in Windows and in Linux it used to work but all of a sudden it seems to be behaving erratic.

Thanks for your concern,
