I have installed Mandrake 7.2, I did Recommended installment and full installment. I have found xterm (which is like a dos prompt I take it?) and typed in linuxconf then setup a new user. Thats all. I have NO clue how I did it. I did this in KDE (I tried gnome which was a nice interface, I also tried enlightenment but it was confusing).
Now what? I can not log onto the internet because when I was trying to setup my network drivers they were not listed. I want to know how to setup my network so I can use my cable modem and use the internet. After that I'm lost. I need help, I don't even know where to begin after that. All I know is I have to somehow setup my network. Is there anywheres I can go to tell me what to do? To teach me how the explorer system works and how to actually use linux? I know I can go through the NHF but none of them tell me where I should head next they are more for specific areas. Please help... thank you

ok first.. one step at a time..
What kind of net card are you using? I tired a netgear fa311.. but had lots of trouble. So i dropped it and installed the one they put into my other comp for cable modem. Second for the network well start off with basics. To use 2 computers on the same cable modem. u need:
1) A hub
2) lan cable
3) 2 net cards working (one in each comp)
4) 2 different Ips. Now you probably only have one. All u do is call up ur cable modem proidor and sign up another one. Usually a about another $10 per month.
5) Are both linux comps. or 1 a window and 1 linux? Well right back and ill help u finish.

To install your network card, run HardDrake, it should do fine ... After that, if you cable connection comes directly to the network card, you're done ... Just say you don't have an IP, try to launch Netscape, and if he doesn't find internet, set the proxy. If your cable isn't connected to the network, I'd say "Ouch, too hard for me, at this time !" To share your internet connection between 2 computers (but I don't think that's what you want), you'll have to perform some routing things (don't know how), but you don't need another ISP ...

It's a bit hard to help you without knowing your system specs, but i'll try.
When you installed drake 7.2 you said you installed the recommended and full install ?. when you got to the modem installation part, did you select adsl(cable) or did you configure a normal modem (dial-up).
On your desktop there is an icon of a hammer and spanner called drakeConf, click on that, it will ask you for your root password, then it will take you to a screen with a lot of different configuration icons. Click on Harddrake, this will let you setup your network card and a lot of other things.
I can only surmise that you did not set up your install properly, as Mandrake usually detects most hardware.

If he had the Netgear Nic it probably wasn't found. HardDrake is a usefull tool for cnfiguring hardware though.
For help with starting out with Linux here are some links that might get your feet wet:
www.linux.org (http://www.linux.org)
http://www.maximumlinux.com/howtos/linux101/2000_04_15/amazingdir.html (I don't know how long this link will remain active, but it is very good primer on the filesystem.)
http://63.209.80.231/en/doc/72/en/user.html/index.html (If you don't have the manual for Mandrake, here it is online. There are other good references and demos on thier site as well.)
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/ (A cross between How-to's and NHF's written just for Mandrake.)
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/bookshelf/index.html (list of recommended books. There is a reason Running Linux is listed first.)
One other tip when reading How-to's and many posts in the forums here, bold items are usually commands. Italics often refer to file names/ directory paths. Linux is case sensitive. ie This is different from this which is different from tHiS.

I have a LinkSys "Network everwhere" 10/100 fast ethernet network card model nc100. This is no wheres on the list of cable modem cards in drakeconf. What do I do  .
I don't know antying about mandrake's configuration stuff, but the module you need for a linksys ISA 10/100 is the module named "ne", for PCI it's "ne2k".
Find another mandrake user to tell you what you need to do do autoload that module on boot.

I tried all the NE's in drakeconf and all say "can not find ethernet card I can not setup network" or something. What is wrong?

To install your NIC: Type "modprobe eth0" (this assumes that eth0 is your network device, ie. you have only one network card...if this is not the case, 0 can be replaced by 1, 2, 3, etc...). This is my answer to everything. If it works, and you're using cable, you're gonna want to make sure DHCP is installed...that will probably get your IP and stats. You'll know that modprobe works if absolutely nothing happens when you do it...no error msgs, it just returns you to the command prompt. If you do find the proper techniques to getting your card installed, and it won't set itself up at boot time, edit your /etc/rc.local file and put the commands to start up your ethernet at the very end of the file. Wish I could tell you more, but my extremely annoying roommate just got back and I've gotta go kick his ***...good luck :)
