Kernel upgrade

hello !
I am real newbie when it comes to Linux and I would some help with unpacking and upgrading a new kernel. I have downloaded the tar and gzipped 2.4.1 kernel and what should I do with now ?
How do I unpack it ? and after that waht should I do ? I have read the kernel-howto but that only describes if u have the kernel in rpm format. So please help me with this one !!
