So, I downloaded the Mandrake 8.1 CDs and I burned the ISO to CD in nero. My CDrom didn't reconize it as a boot CD, but I was able to create a boot floppy from the CD. When I started the installation it asked me to pick a CD that the installation disk was in, but install program could not find the CD??? What it going on here? What should I do? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

TIA

I could be wrong but it sounds like you just burned the ISO directly to the disk not the image.

What burning software did you use? Nero? Did you burn it under windows or linux. More info basicly.

I'm sorry I didn't see the nero part. It's getting late. Did you burn the CD like this.
Open Nero.
Close the wizard if it is started automatically.
Go to "File"
then to "Burn Image...".
In the next dialog, click on "Image Files (*.nrg)" and select "All files
(*.*)".
Choose the .iso file and accept.
In the following dialog make sure:
- Type of Image is: Data Mode 1
- Block size: 2048
- Image header: 0
- Image trailer: 0
- All the checkboxes are unactive.
Click "OK".
In the next dialog check that the "write" and "finalize" option are active.
Click on "Write".

IF you didn't burn it like this then the file was never converted into an image. I got these instructions from the search forum.

The cd must have been created correctly to be able to create a bootdisk from it. The bootdisk just does not detect the cd drive.

What type of cdrom do you have? Is it setup as secondary/master?

Dude I have seen this many time ... Linux and windows hate each other ... There is no reason for it .... Sometimes the CD just will not read when burned by a windows system .... just keep making copies till it works .... the boot disk is linux and cd wont read .... Also check your BIOS setting to see if CDROM is a boot device befor your HDD ..........

When you download the ISO files, download the MD5SUMS file that's in the dir. with it. This is so you can check the integrity of the file you downloaded. use is as follows md5sum -c filename where filename is the name of the file containing the sums from the FTP server.

Anyway, if you do that and everything is fine, try re-burning the CD at 1x. I know it sucks, but when the CDROM is used to boot, it uses very primitive drivers to get itself going. Sometimes, these drivers can be shotty and therefore have trouble reading a quickly burned CD.

I burned a CD at 2x once and it didn't work. Then I re-burned it at 1x and it worked fine. The 2x one that didn't work didn't boot, but it did read all the files on it when I viewed them in windows. That's because windows' CDROM drivers are a lot better than the one your BIOS uses when booting from the CD.
