I am running Red Hat 7.1. Every time I use KPPP dialer, Linux pops up a window asking for root's password.
Is there a way to use the KPPP dialer *without* that window or demand??
I have changed the owner of the KPPP dialer from root to my user account under the "Preferences" tab in the KPPP button on the KDE toolbar, but that has not solved the problem.
TIA

You could set the privileges of KPPP so that everybody can execute it. But...that's not advisable from a security standpoint. Personally, I'd rather just type a password every once in awhile and have a secure system, rather than open up my system to new security holes.
Just a thought.

I had Red Hat also and it did the same thing, I never could get rid of it either. I have SuSE and it doesnt do that anymore. As far as security concerns wouldnt it be more secure to run it as a less privledged user so if your system is compromised you are not connected as root.

No. It doesn't matter. They'll still need to get the password for root in order to use it, unless you have a trojan on your system. That's the only time that would matter.
Otherwise, it's advisable not to let anybody run a program that is normally reserved for root. If there's a hole in the program, you are screwed.
