If you are using verizon as you ISP. You will not be able to connect. They only give the Linux support to companys.

It should, as long as it is an external ethernet dsl modem. During the install there is a place to enter in your dsl information. For most people it works.

D00d, verizon may not be giving Linux support to us mere mortals but going online through verizon dsl is not impossible. I did it at home :) . I have drake 7.2 and the free ethernet card (fa311) and external dsl modem that came with verizon's package. This post (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000201) helped me. It's for a different provider but it will work with verizon as well.

You're using linuxconf? Maybe you could try drakconf. That utility is pretty much intuitive. If you're using verizon online dsl, I bet we're pretty much the same set up. If you have a windows partition (and if your dsl is set up in windows), run winipcfg.exe. Use that information to fill up the dsl set up in drakconf.

Oh, and you should have your ethernet card set up properly.

dear frustratedlinuxnewbie,
I have been using drakconf for configuration all this time!
also i know my ethernet card works because Im on a dual boot with ME on my first harddrive.
Furthermore, I have been to winipcfg and jotted down all info and applied them appropriately to drakconf but still cant get online.

Thanks,

Bubbles :)

I finally got DSL to work last night on verizon. They don't use that pppoe and do not put any information in besides your username and password otherwise it will not work.

Bubblicious: are you sure the problem is in your ADSL? It might be your ethernet card. First, make sure Plug N Play is disabled in your BIOS. Try going to a console and typing "su" to become root. Type "lsmod" and see if the driver for your NIC is listed. If it is, make sure it doesn't say "unused" beside it. Just to be safe, you might wanna type "modprobe eth0".
I use Sympatico, and I downloaded "Roaring Penguin" find it here (http://www.roaringpenguin.com/). There should be a little blue package that came with your sympatico that says "software setup guide". It contains your DNS numbers and your hostname (sympatico.ca). Download and install Roaring Penguin, and see if that does it because it did it very well for me. You'll want RP-PPPoE (Sympatico uses PPPoE).
