Hello All!

I am a Linux Newbie to the extreme (also part time geek). I installed Ret Hat 6.1 over the weekend (which I purchased over the net). I just want to learn how to use this *nix enviornment.

I have lots of questions and lots of enthusiasm for learning this open source OS.

I am a fairly confident Windows9x user (I can build a box from scratch and configure a simple LAN).

My hardware:
PI 166 (hoping to upgrade to 233)
64 RAM

Long term goals:
Get Samba running
Complie a Kernal

Short Term Goals:
Get my NIC configured
Play with the Gimp
Etc.

My questions are, which Linux OS do you believe is best for my needs (and why)?
Which X enviornment is best for my needs?

I have read parts of this message board and you all seem to be mature helpful people.

Thanks in Advance.

Check the "Distro Choice NHF" - there is a link at the top of this page.

And which ever one you decide on, check out www.cheapbytes.com (http://www.cheapbytes.com) as a source for yout distro CD's. I buy all of mine there. You can get Mandrake 7.2 for $3.99 + shipping. Pretty cool.

DLP! Hadnt seen you around in a while. Anyway, I would start right where you are at. Redhat is a decent place to start. I would say Mandrake 6.1, seems to be the easiest to install and run, AFter that, DEBIAN

The new SuSE 7.1 would IMHO be a very good choice. However, if you're already a bit familiar with Red Hat, I don't see any reason why you couldn't get the new Red Hat or Mandrake.

Whatever you do, you end up being smart and you'll say...
:p SuSE :p
 Debian
