I'm having trouble installing LinNeighborhood. I downloaded two different RPM's from the web site. I think the one worked because i don't get any error messages, it just gives me statements to see what version it is and to get help but it's too confusing. Can anyone tell me if i should just download another version of LinNeighborhood or how to fully install the one that i have?

What command are you using to install the rpm? have you tried running it after you install it? what happens if you do?

The command i'm using is:
rpm -i LinNeighborhood-0.6.5-1.i386.rpm
When I run that, that's when it tells me the statements to get the version and help, that's it. I was also wondering if it was ok to try to install it since it's i386 because i have a i586 machine. I don't know if that makes a difference.

I was wondering which file to download. I went to the LinNeighborhood site but I don't know which one to download and install. I'm running Mandrake 9.0 and have a i586.

Just a thought .... Why not install LinNeighborhood from your Man 9 distribution disks. Last week I installed from my SuSE 8.1 distribution disks. The program opens without problem by typing LinNeighborhood in an xterm. I made an icon for my desktop. I still have some configuration matter to work out.

Ok, I got LinNeighborhood working, but I can't browse my windows machine. I see everything for my linux machine but not my windows. Also, bruce, how did you make a shortcut to your desktop?? I don't know where the file is that I need to make a shortcut. Thanks

Click the Add button and enter the Windows machine name and click query. When found, click Ok and then the machine should be added to the list.

Set in the Prefs to always browse as user and add the user name as guest and don't use a password when connecting. Double click on the Windows machine name to bring up the list of shares and just use guest without a password to browse and mount.

Zoist, I'm now able to see the windows machine and the shares, but I can't see the files when I double click the shares. In Prefs, Miscellaneous tab, i have Use RootMountDir/machine/share checked and was wondering what should be in there or just to uncheck it. Thanks

You can't see the files from within LinNeighborhood. It isn't a file manager. You must first mount the directory you shared and then use a file manager to view the files inside the mounted directory.

rustyml, To create an icon on a KDE desktop right click on the desktop and select "create new", then select "link to application". This brings up a window. Under the general tab add a name and change the icon if you like (click the icon for choices). Under the execute add LinNeighborhood as the command. I did not need to change anything in the the permissions or application tabs. Click OK and you have an icon to open LinN.

Regarding seeing the files, in the preferences post mount tab you can specify which file manager to open from LinN. After mounting a file share, right click the mounted share and select file manager and the specifed file manager will open and show the contents of the share.
