i installed mandrake 7.2 today, my first attempt at linux. everything seems to be rather slow, im running on a celeron 300a with 128 MB ram. i started a game called chromium and was getting maybe 1 frame every 3 seconds. i run gkrellm and it says i have 94 procs running atm. have i got unnecessary services running or something? i dont know what a normal number of procs is

94?!?! *whistles* I have 50 going on right now, but that's high for me. Actually, as I recall, Drake always had somewhere up in the 80s. If you want to see all the procs, use the GTop utility that comes with Mandrake (find it under the monitoring section). That will allow you to kill unneccessary procs. What are the specs on your video card? That might have something to do with the bad frame rate. It also might have to do with the Celeron 300. AFAIK, Celeron is the epitome of wimpy processors. Mandrake is great for the newbie, but it's a big, happy, slow thing that's just a pig on resources.
