I have been using LNO for a year or two. I view it as a really good source of info -- when it works.
Right now, my problem is I load a search (I am looking for info on busted supermount in Drake 8.1, and it seems to be busted for a lot of people), and I get back a few items. When I click on one, and read it, then click on back to hit the search list again, it's "expired", and the only way I can find to see the list is to go back and play the whole game from scratch.
Need I tell you this sucks??
Off and on for many months, LNO locks up links on my computer. Not just for LNO, but when it does this, I can't click on any links anywhere, until I reboot. As long as I avoid LNO, it works fine.
And, before that, search didn't work at all, just gave me some sort of test message.
If I'm not the only one who sees this problem, I suggest those hardworking folks who try to keep this thing paying for itself are alienating a lot of clients on a hypothetically great URL.

;) So don't use search.
Um...actually...what browser are you using? That's probably more of the problem than Mandrake 8.1. I have no problems doing a search using Opera.

Don't tell them not to use search or else they will start posting the same questions over and over again. We wouldn't want that to START happening now, would we?

That would be what the ;) is for right before I say, "Don't use search." It was a joke.

Grrr!! Grrr! I was typing in a response, and clicked on HELP on my browser to verify the version. All that I typed was lost when I hit BACK. Grrr! Grrr!
Actually, it isn't really a choice to search or not, since it acts the way it does. And, it's a shame, because most of the time search takes care of problems without asking for help. There's a lot of stuff there.
I am using Win98 and Netscape 4.08, exactly the same setup I used when it worked perfectly. Thus, I am somewhat confident it is not caused by my browser, unless the programmers made changes which do not work correctly on 4.08.
My internet service, attglobal.net, formerly ibm.net, does exactly nothing when I connect. It waits for correct questions from the machine connecting, apparently as opposed to most services which start asking for login and password. I have been trying to connect using linux for a year and a half. Tech (attglobal.net support) doesn't even give advice for KPPP, and no matter what I say, I get lots of "helpful" suggestions from various forums, which all assume the service initiates the connection, thus I get no usable help on forums.
I did get DIP to work once, with an external modem, but now with the lucent driver, for some strange reason, it simply reads the script file (supplied by tech) and no longer executes it. And, I get all kinds of helpful suggestions that I would be better off with KPPP. Sigh.
I travel a lot, including Mexico, (my reason for using attglobal.net and reason for not wishing to use an external modem) but will try the ppp suggestions supplied by tech. With Drake 6.5 they did not work; maybe this time?
It sure won't be drake 8.1. I installed it in a spare computer, and am going to remove it. Junk.

irlandes,
The search function is always slow, and seeems to break fairly often.
To get around the problem of losing your search results when you click on one of the results, right-click on the link and choose the "open link in new window" option.
As for LNO hanging your connection- here's a little gripe I posted in the bugs forum; sound familiar?:
After browsing the LNO forums for a period of time, my net connection (not just my connection to LNO) gets wedged. Once this happens, if I click a link to any page other than the one I'm currently viewing (be it another forum at LNO or an entirely different site), the browser hangs on "connecting to..." or "host contacted, waiting for reply". If I hit my browser's "Stop" button, and then hit reload, it connects but stalls after downloading a few K. For example- if I'm in one LNO forum and I click a link to another forum, or hit the "submit reply" button after composing a post, it will hang on "99 Bytes read". After that, I can't even connect to other sites; any connection attempts thereafter just "spin their wheels". Here are the specifics:
- It happens on three different platforms; a P-500 Win98/Linux Mandrake box and a P-400 Redhat/Mandrake box (at home), and a Mac G3 running LinuxPPC (at work).
- It happens using different browsers on these machines (Netscape 4.7, Netscape 4.6, Opera, and Konqueror). I use Netscape on all 3 of the boxen, Opera on 2, and Konqueror on one. The only browser which hasn't exhibited this behavior is Galeon (running on my Redhat/Mandrake box).
- It makes no difference if I'm logged in as a regular user or just browsing as a guest.
- The amount of time I can spend on LNO before this happens is totally random.
- This only happens after visiting the LNO forums; no other site causes this to happen.
Any ideas?
BTW- if I've ticked somebody at LNO off, there should be a more direct way of ending our relationship, right?I never did get a response.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I will try again using that method. Why, oh why, didn't I think of that??? I guess because I didn't know that choice was available. :-)
As far as your bug complaint, that's EXACTLY what I saw. hung at 99 bytes, etc. Also, only when I went to LNO.

Right clicking on the SEARCH button did not give me that choice.
I did find a posting on the search by brute force that Mandrake has a patch for supermount. I went to Mandrake-linux, and found it listed.
inscripts-6.27-10.4mdk etc RPM is supposed to be a fix for supermount. Alas, none of the mirrors has that copy listed. Actually, I did not check all mirrors, only a dozen or so. I am not going to wait for it to hit. Back to the future with 8.0

Close but no cigar ;)
You need to right click on the result you want to look at, and open it in a new window.
That way the window with the results is behind the new one. Look at the new one, close it or whatever and the results are right there again.

Duh! Gotcha this time, I hope. After fighting with Drake for a lot of two days, I feel like my brain is burned out. Thanks a lot.
Where I come from, Iowa, the Czech people, rich and prosperous founders of the city, tell ethnic jokes about themselves. One has a punchline of "Green Up!" and refers to sod layers of their ethnic group. We use the term when someone does something dumb like I just did.
