During my last Linux distro-experience, (Mandrake 7.??) I had really come to hate Netscape, it was slow, seemed buggy, and caused more frustration that it gave relief when using the internet. When I finally upgraded to Mandrake 8.2 I just stuck with Konqueror, partly because of my previous experiences with Netscape, and partly because I was just too lazy to install anything else:) Like Netscape, Konqueror is much slower for than than Windows exporer is, mostly I notice the lag when waiting for webpage pics to load up, or any kind of minor animation graphics.
When I load up Windows XP, its all click and go, but with Konqueror, its click and wait.
It could be that my settings are not tweaked, it could be that my linux browser is actually slower than windows, I guess it could be a lot of things.
My question is, what are you all using out there and how would you compare it to the speed of windows explorer?

well I mainly use Galeon from the gnome desktop.
I am in mozilla right now, because Galeon doesn't work with Slackware's Dropline Gnome. I really wish it would becuase I love that browser. It has tabs, and gestures to do things like go back in history. (you hold a specified mouse button and move the mouse a certain way)
another thing I love is the google search toolbar, and I do a lot of Google in linux (dependencies)
galeon is only a mozilla front end however
as far as browsing speed in linux I think it's great, seems much faster to render than IE. The browsers load a little slower initially, but the only reason IE loads up faster is because it's always loaded into memory, which I don't like. There are commands to do this with galeon, and probably mozilla too.
I have heard Opera is great, although it costs a few bucks.
one side note is my downloads are much faster in linux then windows, around 285 k/sec. average as opposed to 100 something in windows, don't know why.....
I would download and try Slackware if I was you, it's my favorite distro so far, and I may just buy it to help the cause.. BTW you will want to know some command line stuff first, but it's still real easy....
good luck

I use Galeon it works very well and is my primary browswer. I really like the book marks tool bar and the dont allow pop ups

The ads in the bar don't bother me too much...eventually I'll dish out for the non-ads version.
The advantage for me is that I dual-boot between windows and linux on my main machine and also on my laptop. So by using Opera, I can use the same bookmark file for each setup, no need to import/export or play around...its just a matter of copying the *.adr file.
Plus, I just like the features, its fast, its got tabbed browsing, no-pop-ups, all that stuff.
I tried Mozilla, and while it had the same feel as Opera, it's nowhere near as fast on any of my machines. I also tried Galeon (which admittedly is very good) and while its leaner and meaner (and I find it just as fast) it lacks a few features I like that Opera has.

I use Opera and am very happy with it. On my machine (PII 300, 128Mb RAM) it both loads and renders faster than Mozilla and Galeon. The only thing quicker is Dillo, but that doesn't support much, hence the speed.

I use Opera 7, and with privoxy as my proxy, there are no ads in the bar. Opera is fast light and works great on Linux and windoze. It blows netscape out of the water IMHO.

I use the favorite over on slashdot... phoenix. It really is a great browser (its a child of mozilla, without all the extra crap that slows down mozilla). I use it both on windows and linux, on windows it is faster than ie. I have been using it since the 0.2 build (current build 0.5), and even back then it was really stable. You can download the nightly binaries of what they did today. Its really a great browser.

Phoenix. Don't worry about it being a 0.? version, it is still very stable and quite nice imho. Loads in like half the time of mozilla.

Galeon, but if I want to blog (and get it to publish) I use opera.

I use mostly galeon. I tried phoenix for a while (0.5), but I couldn't stand it. Constantly went back to home page when I would try to do a single back, or when I'd try to type in an address. Then it would start crashing. And I could never get mouse gestures to SHOW that it was installed (it would say it was installed, but never showed up on the extensions tab), nor could I get the advanced tab extension to work in non-root. So I finally gave up and went back to galeon since it has gestures support and (simplistic only) tabbed browsing.

I mostly use Galeon and Opera.
Galeon for when I want better rendering, and Opera when I need speed.
I keep a copy of Phoenix handy, just to track its progress...a hella fast version of a Gecko-based browser is just too much to ignore, even if it is in its infant stages.
'Sides, I use Phoenix when I have to work with Windows because it is faster than IE, has tabs (I've been spoiled by them) and fits on my university's network drive (I think the entire Phoenix directory comes in weighing under 10 meg).

i use Konqueror 3.1.0 it's the best i've found. i was using netscape 7.x it's nice but a lot slower than the new Konq.
if you haven't tried the new Konq i'd suggest trying it.
maybe things are just a lot faster on gentoo?

Yea I use phoenix too, mozilla runs too slow, and takes a while to start up. Phoenix is lightning fast and looks nice. I like it better than Galeon, and yes Phoenix has ad blocking support also.

There are all the good themes for phoenix, I'm using Qute right now, looks nice.

Here are my favorites in order (although phoenix is my fav. I havn't installed it yet, this thread just reminded me!)
1. Phoenix
2. Mozilla
3. Opera
4. Netscape
5. Konqueoror (I despise konqueror, it's fat, slow, and ugly! just go to www.nvidia.com and try to download drivers GRRRRR I get angry just thinking about it ;) )
I don't know if I have ever tried Galeon, is it nice?

I have
Konqueror 3.?
Phoenix 0.5
Netscape 7.0.1
Mozilla 1.2.1
installed though I usually have Mozilla open in Desktop 3 (for LNO) and Konqueror in Desktop 4 for searching etc. (again for LNO).

Galeon is somewhat like phoenix in that it uses Mozilla's rendering engine, but strips everything else out of Mozilla. I prefer it to phoenix because:
1. It supports mouse gestures. The gestures plugin won't work for some reason in phoenix (for me), even though it's supposed to. Mouse gestures are a REQUIREMENT for any browser that I use.
2. See #1.
3. It still has Tab support, like phoenix and mozilla do.
4. It's just as fast as phoenix, much faster than Mozilla. Obviously this is on my computer. Yours may vary.
Downside-No skins. :( Oh well, the working gestures are more important. If they ever get the gestures in phoenix, I too will probably switch over, but until then, I won't touch it again after my initial trials with it.

phoenix 0.5
dear god don't change the name and i'm really desperate for phoenix 1.0 to come out and wipe IE away
i handed out free copy's of phoenix at my dads work
everyone took a copy and 95% of them are using phoenix 0.5 instead of IE!
I was using Phoenix under Debian but now I use Mozilla since it is optimized for my system it is a lot faster than phoenix. Even the Gentoo package for Phoenix is just a precompiled binary. :(
once Phoenix releases a "stable" version and it gets into Gentoo i'll start using it again.
(Phoenix was faster than Mozilla for me on Debian)

(Phoenix was faster than Mozilla for me on Debian) you probably could do a cvs with a version request... Since i believe cvs keeps back-logs of all changes and what not. Worth a shot if you want :)

I've used them all and Mozilla performs best on my box, with all the features listed above. It runs a neck and neck with Phoenix, but Phoenix doesn't have the features I want. TTF font display is good.
netscape 7
1.)I like being able to write unicode mail right out of my browser
2.) I like composer, type and the html tags are rendered seemlessly
3.) Tabed browsing. I use it every morning.
4.) Excellent control features.... many web pages have the penchant to display in reverse i.e. blk on wt. A simple toggle takes care of this prevalent annoyance.
5.) Speed not an issue. I'm on a DSL
6.) I brought the cd for 3.00 us and it installs a full
package including java in less than 10 minutes.

I use: Mozilla 1.2.1
On both my linux and Windoze machines.
I previously used Opera, but I hated the ads for they utilized space that could have been used for viewing more of the webpage. Though, when I need it for speed, I'll use it. Not that often though.
I am interested in Phoneix, though... Once it gets to be a 1.0 version I'll give a go at it.
