Did a search for posts on wordprocessors and found one by irlandes last june at http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000220.html about latex which he described as "the killer app" for linux. Went to several sites for more info and decided to start one level up with lyx, learn that and then down to latex. The lyx site www.lyx.org (http://www.lyx.org) (which must be one of the best organised and informative sites on the web) mentioned Klyx and said that KDE users might prefer Klyx for various reasons. I use Mandrake 7.0 and prefer KDE and already have Klyx installed. The thing is this - at the lyx site there is a load of info about latest stable versions and lots of help about downloading etc. On the other hand, the Klyx sites I have been to are fairly rough, not very informative, and full of broken links. Makes me wonder about Klyx itself. Does anyone use lyx with KDE? If so any advice about its useability with KDE or anything else would be appreciated.
I have used lyx on MDK 7.2. It works great though I am still learning it. It was preinstalled with the Distro, so you might already have a version. You could always download the lyx rpm and go from there.

I tried Klyx when I first installed COL 2.3 and found it to be a basic word processing program. A rough description being a lesser version of Abiword, if you are familiar with that app. If you are just looking for a limited use word processor with some formatting functions, then it should work for you.
P.S. I think the "K" is there just to indicate that KDE put its own front end onto lyx.

LyX is far more powerful than AbiWord. It is much more difficult to use, though. Read through the documentation and see what it can do.

Yup, LyX seems to be very powerful, much more that just "basic word processing". I've used it for only a couple of days so I'm not really familiar with it yet, but I wouldn't say it's difficult - it just requires a different way of thinking.
I don't see any particular reason why you couldn't use LyX with KDE. KLyX may have the same look and maybe feel than other KDE apps and LyX doesn't, but that isn't a big disadvantage.

I've checked it out and yes, it seems that Mandrake has dropped klyx in 7.2 and included lyx in the distro. I checked the RPM thinking I might download it but there are 12 other RPMs you need to install first adding up to about 60 megs! My dialup on a very slow line in the bush would take for ever. Looks like I need to get 7.2. Lyx is not a simple wordprocessor - it is a very efficient typesetting program and well worth looking if you have to produce a lot of reports which need to have a consistent look and feel.

I just launched LyX and Klyx both for the first time. They both created the same directory (.lyx) and behaved the same in the quick look I gave both of them (including the double-warning on closing without saving).
It does appear they are one and the same app as Linuxman says, with Klyx just having a KDE interface 'look.'

Why don't you get mum to get 7.2 for you whilst she is down here in Sydney. I've got to go over to Everything Linux soon, to get hold of Debian, so geez a call if you want me to grab it for you.

Yes, they do look much the same. Yhe lyx web site says Klyx is a port to KDE. The reason I am more interested in lyx is that it comes with a lot of documentation and examples which are missing in the Klyx that comes with Mandrake 7.0. Both the tutorials that I have downloaded use the lyx examples.
For those of you puzzled by pleiedes post, he is my son, 'mum' is my wife (and his mother) and she is 2500 km away in Sydney at the moment. There is nowhere within 900 km of where I live that stocks linux sofware so it looks like I may have to take his advice.

From the KDE website, KLyX seems like it's a very old version of LyX, so just stick with LyX. If you need a word processor, try Kword ( http://www.koffice.org ), a rather nice word processor.

That's what I thought and why I started looking at lyx in the first place. It was ported some time ago and does not seemed to have been developed since - unlike lyx. I'm trying all the word processors one after the other - have not yet got to kword.
