Hi, all: This simple network setup has me buffaloed.
I have:
Linux box, pentiumIII, 550MHz, SuSE7.0, Samba,
using netgear ethernet card FA310TX
Windows box, 98, netgear ethernet card FA310TX
There's a 10/100 hub

I can ping 192.168.1.2 [linux box]
I can ping 192.168.1.3 [windows box]
But, neither box can ping the other. I ran a
command from the linux box:
route -n:
Destination Gateway Genmask Use Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 eth0
127.0.0..0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 lo
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.2 0.0.0.0 eth0

I've checked the hosts file, route.conf, and others
and they seem to be consistent. I have repeatedly
set the network configuration with Yast, and Yast2.

I'm missing something, but for the life of me, I can't
focus on the "missing" piece. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Tom

This may not be your problem but it has happened to me before. On your Linux box make sure that you have Plug & Play turned off in the BIOS. Also check and see if the IRQ for the network card has Plug & Play support enabled in BIOS, if it does then change it to Legacy support.

Just a thought, it may work.

did you check the LAN LEDs on each card ?
and the correponding LEDs on your HUB ?
make sure that both cables are "plain" ones
and that noone is a "crossed" one.
Check that your HUB is powered on.

I've searched so many breakdowns on unplugged PCs.

Hi: Isn't that so true! Unfortunately, in this case,
all the lights are a pretty green. Guess I'll check
with a fellow at work that has lots of hardware, and
network installation experience. I'll trade parts with
known good parts, and if that all checks out, I'll
just shoot myself. Once this problem is solved, I'll
post a short New Topic to let you guys know what
it was. Thanks, Tom
