hey..
i've been using linux for about a year or more now.. i'm getting to know my way around.. but i haven't been able to find one thing:
I need a flavour of linux i can make a set of install floppies for. i want it to mount to an ext2 partition on a small hard drive in my very old laptop. i don't need anything special for packages, just the basic console tools and KDE and a word processor for it. i have about 100megs of hard drive space and NO WAY OF USING A CD for that machine. if anyone knows of any older distro's for a 486 that will let you create a set of floppies to install from lemme know!

Try Zipslack...you'll have to add Xfree86 and KDE, but it may work for you , depending on how much disk space you've got.

try peanut linux

why kde if the system is as decrepit as you say i would go with a lighter wm like fluxbox or openbox or windowmaker

gedit is a gnome editor that is lightweight but much more freindly than somthing like vi kate is also good abiword would probably be too big

most of the things your asking for could be downloaded or installed seperatly later try to find a distro with just that is pretty much impossible but you could put "basic" on there and alter it to fit your needs

Thanks... i'll try peanut linux.
my only real problem with basic linux, is that it boots and goes to ram, i want something to be a primary boot OS.. replace windows 3.1 on the machine (obviously it's old and i'm just trying to find a use for it)
i need something to have it's own partition. the only way into the computer is floppy because it has no means of networking or adding any external information sources.
