Hi
I have a lucent Winmodem and am aware with the issue concerning running WinModems under Linux. For this reason i downloaded a number of rpm based drivers for my modem off the linmodem site but i still cant connect. I tried the internet configuration utility but once i click activate it still doent connect me to the net. Did someone else have this problem and corrected it? I am using Redhat 8.0 With kernel 2.4.18. Is their another way of connecting to the net just to test the connection. I have heard of minicom. How exactly would i get it to connect outside and then know it is connected.

Any help would by highly appreciated.

get the source for the driver, compile and install... read the INSTALL and README files included with the source and any FAQ included with it... you probably have to set up the modem port first before installing the modules in order to get it working.

The only source i can find has been used on a later kernel 2.4.20 would i be able to compile it using version 2.4.18. Or would i need to get the latest version of the kernel

The Lucent winmodem driver doesn't work with all Lucent modems.

Get the source tarball from http://www.heby.de/ltmodem

Unpack it, then do:

./scanmodem

to see if yours is supported.

If it is, then make sure you have the kernel-sources package installed from your CDs and do:

./build_module
./build_rpm

Install the rpm then do:

modprobe lt_serial

Then you should be ready to go.
Make sure whatever dialer program you're using is set to look for the modem at /dev/modem or /dev/ttySLT0.

At last i have managed to get the modem to work. I retried the modem finder script but this time read ALL of its output. I was shocked to find it recommended a driver, i installed it and my modem now gets picked up fine. I ran script several days but didnt read the output fully, in hindsight i could have saved some time. I am now able to surf, send and recieve emails.

Thanks to all who gave up some of their time to help me. I am now 100% up and running in linux and now have the option to drop Windows (What a wonderful feeling).

Thanks again
