I'm switching out a Radeon 7200 for a TNT2 on my Redhat 8 box.
It uses a graphical login, so I think I need to do some things before I swap the hardware??? Or will it be recognized and installed?

I think I need to change my login to runlevel 3... something I've been meaning to do anyway. And then I need to change my XF86config. Then d/l and install the nvidia driver...

Any detailed bit of command syntax would speed things up for me.

TIA

Change the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from '5' to '3', shutdown/poweroff, switch video cards, reconfigure X for the TNT2, test with startx and if all works, change the default runlevel back to '5'.

Either use xf86config/xf86cfg or the one specific to Redhat 8.0.

You might want to make a backup copy of your XF86Config-4 file just in case.. ;)

All those are good advices, and in addition you should make sure that kudzu ( the hardware configuration daemon ) is running.

I changed video card myself a few months ago, and this was how it went:

- Took out my old ATIXpert98 with 8mb of ram
- Put in my gForce MMX with 64mb of ram ( what a difference! )
- Booted into Linux
- Kudzu came on, announced that it had found new hardware, and would I like to configure it? ( Yup, please... )
- Kudzu removed the old ATI xfree server then added the new nvidia server
- Bang, boot into the GUI and a much faster KDE desktop...
- Added the nvidia drivers about a month after that, and only because I wanted to play TuxRacer :D

All in all, an absolute joy...

Of course, Windows98 ( on the same box, dual boot ) went totally insane when it saw my new card, and made me work for a few hours to finally get it going...
