i have a question about setting up smp kernel on linux. i installed rh7.1 with the regular kernel and the smp kernel. now when i start up, doesn't say at the login prompt, also doesn't list 2 cpus when running top. Now, I find that the symlinks in /boot aren't pointing to the smp versions... so i change the pointers..., also /etc/lilo.conf looks good. i reboot, but still no luck. then i edit /etc/lilo.conf and remove the non-smp entry, run /sbin/lilo, reboot, now it works.
so what was wrong here? was it the non-smp entry in my /etc/lilo.conf?

LILO was probably starting the non SMP image by default when you reboot. Since you removed it from lilo.conf, LILO was free to pick the next kernel down the list, the SMP kernel.

No. I don't think that is the case since the smp version was the default.

Wanna here something odder? I had an install that would only work with an smp compiled kernel (or at least one with -smp after it, it even showed the bogus mips of 2 procs, hehe) . But I only had one cpu in a 1 cpu MB. Heheh I figured it was an error in data collection and the smp compiled kernel was really for 1 cpu. oh well it was/is funny and it worked fine.
