I am totally new to Linux. I got a new computer that, of course, has WinXP on it. It is a Pentium4 2ghz/512RAM/100gb machine from Matrix (BestBuys).

I bought a copy of partitionmagic and loaded its boot manager. I partitioned off a second primary partition with space for Linux and its swap area. I loaded redhat 8.0 with kde 3.0(?).

I found that both grub and lilo don't seem to like my logitech usb mouse. I started with grub and it would periodically lock up. Partitionmagic's boot manager would also. I switched to lilo, but nothing changed. I did find that if I didn't touch the mouse but only used the keyboard to get around the screens all would be well. A workaround I know, but it works.

Now to the real problem. I have a DSL connection to the internet. I access it through a router rather than any internal computer hardware. The computer is set up to use dhcp. All this seems to work fine in both windows and linux. I can access the internet fine. The problem is that if I do from Linux/kde the computer locks up solid after a few minutes. I have found that if I go to a terminal screen (not a window!) and run lynx the textmode browser, it doesn't lock up at all. I suppose that means it probably has something to do with kde or xwindows. BTW, it does this whether I use monzilla or the kde browser. After it locks up I can't use the keyboard commands to switch to any terminal windows either. I have to reboot to do anything.

Could this have something to do with my mouse again? or might it be something else?

when you configured x i assume auto didn't work for the mouse and you chose logitech

"Logitech" protocol is for old serial mouse models from Logitech. Modern Logitech mice use either "MouseMan" or "Microsoft" protocol.

my terminal doesn't have mouse support at all and you really don't need it....i can't remember what the program is that provides terminal mouse but you can research more about how to turn it off
or uninstall it

i hope this helps -- i don't use usb mouse so this is just something i had in a how to i have here not from experience so it might be off base or outdated

Okay, if I want to change my mouse option to "auto" how do I do that? As I remember I picked logitech-USB or something that seemed fitting for my particular mouse when I first set RedHat 8.0 up.

Two other things. 1st, I don't care to have the mouse accessable from a terminal screen. It isn't now, but that is okay by me for now. 2nd, Linux has never locked up on me doing anything but using a web browser (I'm not counting Lynx as I said it seems to work fine in a termimal screen). I can play a game, type in a word processor, or fiddle around with any of the many utilities, and everything is fine. If I go into a browser though it will lock up in 5 -10 minutes. I can sometimes go to a couple of sites, spend a minute or two, close the browser and all will still be good. Any longer and the keyboard and mouse become nonfunctional and I have to hit the reset to do anything.

As I said, I'm new to this OS, and don't know much.

try manually editing /etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) and look for the InputDevice section for the mouse. It should say

Option "name" "Logitech"

and

Option "vendor" "Logitech"

which would be where you replace Logitech with "autodetect"

Okay, I started this thread because I was continually getting lockups in kde when I used any internet browser. I only thought it might be my mouse, because of other problems I'd had with it.

I think I found the real culprit; accidently. I decided to make a change and add a wireless connection to my home network. I bought an el cheapo 11mb wireless broadband router made by Hawking. It replaced a netgear 10mb hub. Once I got my DSL modem working with it and a couple of old laptops working on the network I thought all was good. Well, it turned out better still. I have had no lockups in kde since I replaced my old hub. I know that what I am using now is a switch rather than a simple hub, and that is supposed to be better, but I didn't expect my old hub to be any sort of problem.

Anyone know why this would be the case? Not that it matters now. Dare I very use my netgear hub again?
