why are programs in linux so hard to install?
why cant it just be an exe file or something?
a simple thing as installing a program shouldnt be this touch
i gotta ./configure and then like make or something then i get errors

this is why linux isnt as big as windows
linux makes simple things so dificult

1. they aren't difficult to install, it is just different from Windows

2. because it isn't Windows

3. if you don't like it then go back to Windows and stop complaining. No one wants to listen to you *****.

4. If you have a question on how to install something or a problem you are having then post it rather than just posting a rant about Linux on a Linux board.

Do as it says. Install the libraries and you ought to be fine. Such messages are there to HELP you. Not impede you.

It's not. Would you like some cheese and crackers to go with that wine?

Which distro. Use GAIM, with ICQ support already and it is already installed on your system. Configure, Plugins, load the protocols you want, or
go back tot he licq page, download an rpm. No one says you have to use the comilable version. The redhat 7.3 version will probably suffice for Suse, Redhat 8.0 or Mandrake 8.2, 9.0

Here are the install instructions for the rpm.

Click on the RPM from your filemanager.

hlrguy

P.S. It probably put a link in your start menu, next time you restart X, but you can fire it up with
licq on the command line.

i downloaded the rpm from the site

and i followed all of you instructions but of course all i got were more errors

</Documents/archive/licq-1.2.0a-2.i386.rpm;echo RESULT=$?
error: failed dependencies:

libkio-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-1.2.0a-2

what does all that mean and what do i do to fix it

Santino,

LICQ is an option to install anyway?? Unless your running a terribly old version of linux.

If I remember correctly you screwed up your windows boot and everything else, you sure you even installed linux right?

REAL EASY to install LICQ, do an update packages and look on your cd rom.

I agree with Cybr099, quit all your *****ing, if you don't like it or you are too stupid to do it, take a hike. :p

Hi

I have not seen many people get help after the way the last reply was sent, it is no point getting a mood with the guys on here as they were just like the rest of us in the beginning "Novices", and I have to put this across and tell everyone that without the help off people on linux newbie I would have not been able to learn a single thing about linux as i too found it very hard in the start of it.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK PEEP'S

Mark

Use your MDK package manager to determine if you application is actually on your HD. If not use the package manager to install it. Explore your startmenu and it's applications to familiarize yourself with your OS.

Or maybe, you could just look at your standard Mandrake documentation and use GAIM. I seem to be repeating myself...

Something to remember:

Linux is not Windows

The GUI is not meant to replace the command line in Linux. Its meant to supplement it.

Now, rpm spits that out when you're missing stuff that it needs. Check your CDs.

Are you using Mandrake?

1)Go to the start menu, open it up.
2)Go to configure
3)Go to packaging
4)Goto up software manager
5)Give it a few seconds to load up all the programs on your comp
6)Search for Licq
7)Click it and it will tell you if its already installed or not.
---If it is, pushing the install/uninstall button on the top left will
---remove it, if its not installed, pushing this button will install it.
8)When you go to install it, it will tell you most likely tell you
---that it needs other files installed as well. Highlight the files
---that it shows on the screen, (actually you might not have to
---highlight), push the next button and it will install everything
---you need.
9)Push finish when its done.
10)Check your start menu,
--goto networking
--goto instant messaging
--open up LICQ

From there you are on your own:)

I dont know if this helps or not, but this is what I would have to do on my Mandrake to get it installed and working. THis process would take perhaps 5 minutes..perhaps a bit less if you are used to navigating the menus.
