Hi,

I'm new to all this so...

I'm trying to access a CD-RW drive and get the following error, incidentally, I get the same error with the floppy drive...

Could not mount device.
The reported error was:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems

Needless to say I can't access either drive.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

Hi. I'm new, too. Never touched a Linux until I installed it on an old comp five days ago. My problem was activating my swap partition, which was supposed to be done by the installation process (I thought). So maybe I can't help, but I know I had to add a line to my fstab file. That's where mountable drives are dealt with. The other issue I ran into was that the CD-ROM had root-only permissions (that I only noticed with music CDs, bizarrely enough - data seemed fine) until I logged in as root and changed it. The error message doesn't sound like that, though. So check fstab first and then permissions - maybe that would work.

*wanders off to seek help for his own confusions*

Sounds to me like a mounting problem (dahhh). Look at the fstab == /etc/fstab and also look at the current list of mounted partions, df. I have at times (in the beginning when still using a floppy) have ejected the disk without unmounting it, then tried to mount another floppy and had issues with my computer complaining that the floppy (/dev/fd0) was already mounted.

df will tell you all the block devices (hard drives, CDs, floppies, network mounts) that are mounted and to which system path.

Nathan.

What distro / version are you running? Are you using the icons oin the desktop or the mount command from a console?

Mandrake uses supermount and therefore you don't need to use the mount command. You might get the error when trying to mount removeable media when its already mounted.

With supermount once the media is inserted you can use any file manager or the console to browse. Inactivity will automatically unmount the media.

If you are using the desktop icons then try using the mount command in a console. If that works then you can try to change the properties or delete and create new icons for your CDROM and floppy.

Sorry about the vagueness of my posts...

I'm running RH 8.0.

When I try mounting the cd rom (mount /mnt/cdrom) I get the same error I had above from accessing the icon on the desktop.

When I boot the computer I notice an error that looks similar to the error I've been getting from the icon, but it goes by so fast I can't really read it clearly.

Also, I know the floppy and cdrom work because the machine also is being used to run XP.

Thanks,
Pat

Actually that is a very popular error posted here at LNO.

Have a look through these forum search results for 'too many mounted filesystems' to see which may pertain to your particular problem.
