Hi all,
This is my first attempt installing Red Hat so please attempt to be gentle with me. I promise, my ignorance is temporary. UMass courses begin on 1/22, can't wait to get knee deep.
Okay, I'm needing to upgrade xFree86 from the version on RHL 8.0 CD (4.2.0) to 4.2.1. My AMD Athlon XP 2000+ is equiped with the unsupported nVidia nForce2 (220 chipset).
My system has never fully booted up. I'm having to download the xFree86 files to a floppy.
With this in mind, How do I go about installing xinstall and the patches from the root prompt?
Here's what I get when I attempt to start the GUI
$startx
Build OS: Linux 2.4.18-11 smp i686 [ELF]
Build Host: daffy.perf.redhat.com
Module loader present
OS Kernel Linux version 2.4.18-14
gcc version 3.2.20020903
Fatal server error
No screens found
XI0 Fatal IO error 104 on x server
I promise, I'll someday soon return any and all favors to those who are starting to learn non-microsoft systems...
Thanks,
Steven
