It is not my intention to start an argument among those loyal to various distros, but I do need some advice... even after having researched this topic for a while. At my place of employment, another computer tech and I have been given the go ahead to build a Linux box in an effort to explore what uses might be available to the educational community. We are currently interested in servers rather than desktop environments. We have pulled pieces of hardware from various machines, and this is what I know about the hardware currently available to us:

Cleron 400-500 MHz processor
Standard CD-ROM drive
IDE controller speed = 66
Intel 810 Chipset

Based on the parts we have collected thus far, do any of you have opinions (and I am sure you do) on what would work for our hardware?

We do not yet know for which purposes we will be using this machine. There are so many possiblities: web server, backups, etc. My cohort is interested in Webmin and, therefore, in Caldera. I've used Mandrake for a while now, so am not too interested in that distro for this project. I will not state my preferences but will wait for your knowledgeable replies.

Thanks in advance!

Any of them will work: RedHat, SuSE, Slackware, etc. But of course the LNO favorite seems to be Debian, w/ Slackware perhaps second.
