so your computer will not boot from the libranet CD? is that correct? are you able to boot from any other Cd's like your win 95 cd? if you are then the first thing I would do would be to check your libranet disk image do you have a box with a bootable OS? & net access? if so I would go to this site http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/verifyiso.html & get the MD5 Sums of your libranet ISO & make sure it is good becuse if you have a bad iso image you will not be able to boot from your libranet CD & you will need to get a new image & verify that it is ok. hope that helps post back if you need further help:cool:

yes, that is correct, and no, can't get anything to boot. not even the win95 cd. i think i'm goning to have to do a "low-level" format. any help on what to do after would be welcome. Thanks, LeRoy.

Actually, if no cd will boot on the computer, but you have the option to boot from CD in the bios (if it's searching for a bootable image, then it must be), then the culprit is more than likely the cd-rom. Either it doesn't support being used as a bootable device (unlikely), it's getting ready to go up (highly possible), your motherboard just plain doesn't like it (possible), or something else on the same channel is interfering with it (unlikely). Your drive probably will simply not boot because you might have done something wrong, and now win95 is simply not bootable, or not where the boot record expects it to be. Before you go trying to low level format the drive (and possibly ruin it, but definitely waste a good long time), try borrowing a known boot-supporting cd-rom drive (second computer, frineds computer, etc.) and put it on the secondary channel by itself, then see if it works any better.

if you do end up having to do a low level format Afterwards I would try what I suggested in my previous post. I would recommend dual booting linux & win 95 be sure to install windows first. Before you attempt the low level format have you tried booting from a win 95 boot disk & running scan or check disk? also have you attempted to use fdisk to do a standered format. I ask this because a low level format can cause problems & in some cases physical damage to some HD's, If the wrong utilities are used. Most of the time the LL is done at the factory. Make sure you get the correct low level format utility for your drive. I would get the utility from the drives manufacture

First, MS never made the Win95 CD bootable. I always needed a boot disk or am I confusing myself here. Anyways, what it sounds like is you need a disk to boot off of and start the install. All that is required is an FDISK and format. I would highly advise against a low-level format of the hard drive. Without the correct instructions (usually with the advice of the manufacture) should you attempt a low-level format.
The only time I have needed to do a low-level format was to test a dead hard drive for warenty replacement. Maxtor wanted me to read them the failure message from THEIR util before allowing me to exchange the drives. In addition, the program I used to do the low-level format was from Maxtor's website.
So, in sumation of all my advice and rambling. Find a floppy image for booting & starting the install of the distro you want. After the install is started, all of the distros I have used (RH & Slack, and Free & Open BSD) allowed for installation method via CD, network, HD. Stop waisting time and boot from a floppy. Just keep that in mind if you need to do emergancy recovery boots.

I just want to stress this: don't low-level format!
Not only because you might get problems with your fixed disk, but also because you're having trouble with the CD, not with the fixed disk. You can't low-level format a CD-drive, you don't use fdisk on it either.

sorry, guys, got your posts this am. already did the LL with the utility from fujitsu. everything went well, till my win95 startup floppy flopped! jacked around until i thought why not try my 98se floppy. well it worked. only, i still can't get it to read from the cd-rom. don't have a 98se disk. does any one know where i can go to dl files to get them on a floppy? i am hoping that will do the trick. i am also going to pull the cd-rom from this machine to try that. it's an asus 52x max, to see if that helps. Thanks for you concern about the LL and your help, LeRoy.
ps, it will only boot from the floppy, i mean, if the floppy's not in, i get told "failure.. missing operating system"

hey, do i feel cool now! as i write this, "Libby"(as she is now known), is loading packages!! does this bring me to the beginning of the "Linux Geekdome"? can i now be part of the "elite" class i've read on other forums,(not here,or libranets' forum)?
to explain what i did: pulled asus cd-rom from this box and added to "Libby", then booted 98se sys disk, got into dos, set partitions, rebooted, set bios to read cd-rom,(yes, it was set to that on the other), booted into a:\, and away we went!! i want to thank all who helped, tried to, and especially, JUDLAND!! he returned e-mails to me well into the nite! kept me from giving up on linux all together.http://www.virtualsky.net/daves/index.htm. this is judlands web site. please, have a look, you may like it!
