GAIM USE

I'm obviously new to linux and one of the more difficult things for me to understand is the network configurating (since my school is on one huge network with ethernet cards). I'm using GAIM and it worked before, but now evertime I sign on it connects me and then immediately disconnects me. Other forms of AOL instant messaging work fine. Is this user error? Does anyone understand why this keeps happening (I'm rarely satisfied with an answer unless I know the reason behind it)? Thanks for your time.

Does it say "No Configuration"? If so, then you have an old, non-workable version of gaim and need to get a new one. Check Freshmeat (http://freshmeat.net)

No, in the space at the bottom of the GAIM window it says something like. . . connecting. . . connected. . . disconnected. The last part comes up really fast.
