Becoming more comfortable with my linux box, but I am still not very familiar with what folks consider to be essential software items. Suggestions for must-have apps would be appreciated.

Some apps that I have been using regularly: GFTP, gnometoaster, Sylpheed, Opera and Mozilla for web browsing, Emacs for text editing and making html pages, XMMS for mp3, mplayer for video, open office for spreadsheets, and jpilot for Palm synching.

esential is entirely dependent on what you use your linux box for.

I really like:
ximian evolution for mail
ximian RedCarpet for updating some software.
XChat for IRC chat
apt-get/apt-rpm with synaptic for installing software.
Audacity for basic sound file editing.
LimeWire for MP3/video/file sharing.
DCGui for filesharing on dirrect connect networks.
and can't forget Gimp for image editing.

to you these might not be "esential", But I like them.
