Linux loaded fine, the problem is with X. Your window manager did not successfully find an acceptable resolution in which to display X. Your video hardware may be unsupported, but chances are you just need to reconfigure X. If you are using Red Hat run xconfig as root. In Mandrake (even though red hat based), this command does not work. I have heard of a program called SuperProbe that can probe your video card and monitor much better than the standard probe. I dont know where to find it though.

Sounds like your install was hosed somehow... Did you create a swap partition during the install? You need a swap...
Might want to reformat and try a fresh installation.

yes im pretty sure i made a swap i used auto alocate for my partitions in diskdrake
i think its a problem with the resolution, i tried installing a few times with the same result, then i tried 7.1 which worked, then i upgraded with 7.2, and it didnt work again, but the old linux option booted but the resolution was horrable and big and it could not be changed. I have a suspition that my monitor is the problem, it is a dell but not capable of anything beyond 800-600 res
once again i am very grateful to any help
