I always used to hear things like i use linux as my main OS and only use Windows for games. Windows is better for games than linux, etc... But now i saw someone post a benchmark of Q3 in windows and in linux and the linux's benchmark was significantly higher than windows. Hmmm anyone know which is better? Hope the answer isn't going to be to biased :/

I'd have to say Windows is better for games, IMO.

You're free to use linux for games if you want but I'll stick to windows for that. It's not that I think that windows is better for games it's that the games that I want to play are only available on windows. Linux is a fabulous system, but as of yet it's deffinately not a gamers system. There's just not enough games. That's the one thing that sucks about linux :(

As far as I know, Linux is the more efficient platform for games, but Windows has more available.

i have read an article by carmack on why windows is a better quake 3 platform. it is mainly because of DirectX though.

 FreeCiv

Try it out. It's a hybrid of Civ 1 and 2. It's designed for network play, but since it's turnbased and low end on graphics so you can play with just a dial-up account. I love this game

I don't see how that makes any sense considering carmack only uses opengl..? If you could link to the article that would be nice, otherwise I would assume that Carmack would think the exact opposite, replace windows with linux and directx with opengl in your statement and I would of nodded my head and went to the next post without thinking more of it.

Linux is the better platform especially when it comes to flexibility but more games are available for Windows.

Please ..... Let's not fool ourselves here. Windows is HANDS DOWN a better gaming system.

I will give MS props for building the best multi-media OS out there right now.

However, for everything else, there's linux ;)

Now this is completely out of the realm of fooling myself because I have statistics to prove it.

UT in Windows 800x600 32bpp average 60fps
UT in Linux 1024x768 32 bpp average 58fps

I know which OS I'll be running UT on :)

But I will readily say that far more games will run on Windows and with less hassle than on Linux, but if you can get them to run on Linux it seems to very much be worth it.
