I just installed Redhat 8 the other day. Get network up, start looking for updates for my hardware. Get the Nvidia rpm for my card

NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm
//
Version: 1.0-4191
Operating System: Linux IA32
//

and

NVIDIA_kernel-1.0- 4191.rh80up_2.4.18_18.8.0.i386.rpm
//
RedHat 8.0 updated to 2.4.18-18.8.0 UP i386 Architecture
//

reboot and X can't start,,,get alot of screen flickering, and then to a xfconfiguraor like screen,,but the only thing that is in english is the dialog box, the buttons and text in the behind that dialog box is all jiberish ( very odd characters)

And quick fix?

I could reinstall,,but then i wont learn nothin:)

Did you get the readme file from the Nvidia driver download site?

It explains what you need to do with your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

You don't need to reinstall the entire os if you cant get the driver to work, all you have to do is remove the rpms and return to the orginal settings.

Did you change your etc/X11/XF86Config file so that it is looking for the new driver?

Did you install the rpms from outside of X? If you didn't this could be giving you problems.

If you haven't looked through the README at the nvidia site, you should do that. Installing drivers isn't all that complicated, but if you did not follow the instructions you will have problems.

And if it was shorter, you'd be complaining that some piece of useful information had been left out, once you found out about it. :rolleyes:

You can't have something be both short and informative. It's impossible, I'm sorry.

Im sure it's too late, but you don't need all 59 pages, just the ones that apply to your install.
