Im also having sound difficulties! Why is it that us linux users need to go through so much red tape with our systems? Its almost, but not quite, enough to make a sane man want to go back to windows:) But as Im not sane, here I am!

I dont think that my difficulty comes from my hardware, actually Im sure of it. When I first installed my mandrake 8.2 the sound worked great. I even got the KDE theme song to play when I booted it up.

Recently I started hardening my system. Mandrake 8.2 uses Bastille and MSEC. I cranked them both up and added barage of protective measures on my system. Now, low and hehold, my sound doesnt work anymore!

I dont think mandrake uses sndconfig, as it doesnt exist on my machine. It has something called ARTS. I get an error message that the sound server cannot be connected to. Check to make sure that you have blah this and blah that file installed, which I do. I guess I need to configure this ARTS thingy but before I started playing with it I wanted to ask all the good folks out there if they have any suggestions before I pretend to know what Im doing and start messing with files:)
