Ok. I'n not a blond. And I've never updated the kernal.
Should I update my kernal to 2.4?
I run a RH 6.2
P166 92mbs ram
This box servs internet to 2 Billy boxes.
Will I have to make any configuration changes after update?

You don't need to, and it takes a little bit of time. Do you need any of the new features? The new IP Masq code (using iptables) is apparently good, so you might be interested in that.

The view I take is to compile when you want new features/bug fixes and not just for the sake of compiling something new.
In this case, you probably will only care about iptables (successor to ipchains). If your current firewall is lacking something, probably port forwarding, then go ahead and compile.
As for configuration changes beyond LILO, you might need to reconfigure new modules. It varies from system to system. I know my network card changed from rtl8139.o to 8139too.o . Kind of a nonsense change but there might be others like it. The only way to find out is to try.
The c hange in name for the rtl8139 chipset almost certainly lies in the fact that the two are written by different groups of people so they wanted to differentiate the code base. Unfortunately the driver code base is not quite as good as the old one. You might know what I mean if you ever rant the test-8 kernel (spontaneous reboots whenever the ethernet adapter was under any sort of load). It was not cool seeing a post screen when you were in the middle of downloading some email.
