I have tried to install Mandrake 8.0 on my file server twice now; once with a regular install and the second with a text install.
Both times, as soon as it gets to the part where it says:
Uncompressing Linux...
it hangs.
Does this mean I have a bad hard drive or is it my Mandrake software?
Thanks for any help offered.

did you download/burn the cd yourself?
when it says 'uncompressing linux' it's loading the kernel into memory so that you can have support for devices during the install.
there could be a problem with your system accepting the kernel... say perhaps not enough memory?
what kind of system are you running? (specs)

Generic 486 mobo
Pentium 100
32mb EDO RAM - 4 SIMMS
2 1.6gb HDD's - WD and Seagate
Diamond Stealth 2mb VRAM Video Card
1.44mb Floppy
200w U.S. Power PSU
4x Creative CD-ROM
If my amount of memory is a problem, then which linux distribution would you recommend?
I've had problems with Red Hat 7.1 too.
Thanks for you help. I appreciate it.

It could be a bad burn, problematic memory or your pc just does not meet the minimum requirements.
I would suggest you visit the websites of the distros you are considering and see which versions would be more suitable for your 486m/b and Pentium 100. :)

Ok, I think you are on the right track about not meeting minimum system requirements.
I'm going to go research some more distributions.
