You need to be logged in as root, or in the terminal window, type su - then enter the root password in order to use sndconfig..

However it is not going to work, sndconfig in rh8.0 with the Via 8233 sound card just craps out ( I know, I am going through the same thing right now) I am looking for a more up to date drive for the AC97, so if i find something I will let you know here.

A.
Linux errors are less black-magic then in windows. Read it and think about it: it couldn't execute the command. Solution? (a) the program does not exist - go install it (b) you don't have permissions - try running it as root (c) it's not in your $PATH. although in this case, first try (b), then (a), then (c) in that order. :D

B.
If you want to get decent help, you need to supply more info. What are you trying to do: apps (xmms, xine, system sounds?), files (ogg, cd, mp3, midi, etc.?), commands run, errors recieved, and most importantly: what YOU already tried to fix it. Except for that, report anything unusual that may be relevant. Distro, version, kernel, etc. may apply - add this info if you feel its relevant.

well, Like I said above, I was having the same problem. Not any more. I have great sound both system and UT. I installed ALSA, and It really made a world of difference.

you have to get rid of all other sound drivers, and install the three packages from Alsa ( Drivers, LIB and Utilities) and do some minor configuration, but it was very easy even for a newbie to do, as long as you follow the step by step instruction.

If you go to http://www.alsa-project.org/~goemon/ you can get the information you need.

Let me know if this works for you.

Hey nice forum you have here.

I'm getting the same problem with sound when playing cd's. I can play MP3's, I can play DVD's with sound, but I cant listen to cd's, the player is running but theres no sound. Tried playing them as root and no difference.
I tried to install a couple of different cd players and no change.
I'm running Mandrake 8.2

Any idea what the problem is?

Actually, you need to type

unzip2 (filename)
then tar them.
it is all explained in the directions on that website, just follow what it says.

AIM me at jimat350 or if you use MSNIM it's bavinic@hotmail.com if you need direct access to me.

Please excuse my question if it sounds stupid, but 1: do you have an audio cable conntected from the cdrom to the sound card? ( probably do)
and 2: in the mixer, is the CDaudio slider up and un muted??

just a thought.

Dont know about the audio cable, havent checked that, but yeah the mixer is ok, not mutted, and it's as high as it will go.

If I can play dvd's with sound fine, I should be able to play audio cd's right? Maybe it's just a permission setting, but then it should play be ok as root, right?

I'm confused. Spent the last 2 days compiling and recompiling xine till I got it to work, figured that audio cd's would be easy compared to that, guess not :(

Actually, you can play DVD without the audio cable connected, audio CD's require the cable running from the cdrom drive to the sound card's cdin connector.

I doubt that your problem is permission related, I do not know a permission for CD-A although, I do not know everything and could be wrong about that :).

anyway, I would say, open the case and just look , if it is there, I am wrong, if it is not, good place to start :)

It is just a small thin wire that goes from the left side of the cdrom drive right to the sound card.

I have an ALSA driver installed also. If you check out the page for supported sound cards and click on the link for yours, the site will tell you step by step on how to install it.
