I ALREADY HAVE WINDOWS XP PRO AND WISH TO KEEP IT INSTALLED.

i'd recomend Mandrake, Redhat, or Suse.
anyone of them should partition your harddrive for dual-boot with windows.

I would recomend Mandrake that is the distro I use.
It has a great install and will partition your hd without
destroying your xp. just make sure you defrag before
you start the install. also has great hardware detecttion.

1. Who the hell are you screaming at?
2. listen to Sharth
3. If you've "heard so much great things about linux" maybe you should go back to the source and figure out if linux is for you. In answering this question, you will (with some research) find the distro for you. ie. find a distro that does what you need/want to do with linux.
4. Dun'kalis: that's a great link. Moving to bookmarks.
5. Sorry to be rough on you, mgsamson, but if you do a simple search of this forum alone you will find about a 1000 people that have asked the same EXACT questions as you, and have gotten very good responses. As teachers have often told you in school, "Be a good boy: do your homework!"

But please read up on net-etiquete before you post again mgsampson...

I said "almost", the major brands like RH, MDK,Suse. etc can be downloaded freely. Go here to see a whole bunch of free distros http://www.linuxiso.org/
