Hi all,

I was just wondering if your ISP has a usage (download and/or upload) monthly limit?

If so, are you able to cap it? Eg - once you get to the limit, you have to ring them up or can not use the internet anymore?

Just wondering because I rang my cable company up last night and they said they couldn't cap my usage, meaning that if I go over (ie through someone hacking into my pc) I will be charged 16 cents per MB!

Luckily I run Linux and installed a script to cap my usage....................it would be a shame if I was using windoze and I receive a massive bill and have to declare bankcruptcy or something

You can also add costing to kppp. It will track usage and let you know where you are at. I would check if it has a built in limit, but I am online right now so...I'll check it later. :)

P.S. No Limit but that is the norm here. You can buy cheap ISP from my provider. 5 hours for $4.99 for email checking, quick surf, etc.

I'm very happy with my ISP, 15 bucks unlimited every month (although they must disconnect me every 5 hours), and even the tech support knows linux. :)

Mine too. Earthlink has been good to me. Unlimited access (my squid server is connected 24/7/365 for 20 bucks a month. The tech people at Earthlink don't freak out when I mension I use Linux, but they don't know squat about it either..

Most American ISPs only charge by the month. I hear that charge-for-usage plans are common outside of the US.

I have no upload/download limits. Yay.

PS Earthlink rocks.

As I'm on a dial-up for now, I use Quik Internet, and have no limit, and a normal unlimited account is A$29.95/month, and for A$120/month, I have 24hr access, and have not dropped offline since(even while bootstrapping Gentoo and downloading X,Kde, etc for 3 days (I can download more than the Bigpond cap in a month on my dial-up).
If I were to go broadband at the moment, I'd have to choose Internode, as A$99.95/month gets you 512/128kbps and no limit. The very thought of the damage I could do with a limited internet account frightens me spitless.
Edit: forgot to mention, the servers Quik use are all IBM RS/6000 boxes running 'nix.

If you dial up people (I use it too depending where I'm connecting from), like cheap access so much (U.S. only) why not check out AllVantage.

No this is not an ad. I've just seen so many post where people write about their cheap dial access.

I enact a 2gb/4gb (res/bus) monthly bandwidth usage for my wireless customers, I do not cap nor warn customers that they have surpassed the transfer limit. I charge $29.99 for overage under 1gb, overage above 1gb is $49.99 per gb, rounded up.

I'm pretty happy with my ISP, my university. $80 a year for a T1 connection, and as just about all the ports besides http, ftp, email, and news are blocked, no one can run kazaa to slow the network down... resulting in average download speeds of 145 kb/s off ftps and newsgroups.

Blocking those ports was the best thing they ever did! Of course, they unblocked them over break, and forgot to block them again when school started up! The most I ever got was 2kb/s, luckily they blocked the ports soon after. :D

I get 100+ kilobytes per second download, 24/7, no limits. I run apache, exim, and ssh 24/7, and my ISP doesn't complain.
