Do I need all these things running?

Does anyone know if I can eliminate some of these? This box has no keyboard an no mouse or monitor. The access to the box is SSH. I have removed the processes from this list that I know I need.. But I am really curious about the TTY.. Please advise. This box will have a couple of people logged in throuhg ssh but no one is ever local. Thank you for your time.

Hmm...let's see.

you might want to kill or eliminate portmap,rpc.statd all these relate to NFS unless you mount your shares to other Linux boxes then you don't need them and better of to have them shutdown for security reasons.

automount unless you want to auto mount your devicxes then it's safe to get rid of it.

atd if you want to run jobs at specified time
then keep it otherwise shut it off.

gpm and xfs relate to pasting on consoles and xfs to serving fonts...if you don't intend to use them then stop these.

keventd,kswapd,kreclaimd,bdflush,kupdated,mdrecove ryd,khubd,syslogd,klogd,mingetty all need to be running for proper operation of your box.Use your better judgement as to what should be running and what not.If not sure looke them up in man.Hope this helps.

Do I need to run all the Mingetty? Since I only use ssh and no local logins.. When someone logs in they appear as pts/(increment) under tty. Please advise.

Yes Sir! :D AFAIK they need to be running for your login consoles to appear...

So I can only ave 6 people login at once? (since there are only 6 mingetty things running?) If I cut it back.. would that mean only 1 person coudl log in at once?
Am I making any sense?
