I can't seem tto be able to properly mount my cdrom as either user or sometimes not even as root. If I try unmounting (as root, user never works) it tells me that it is busy, even if nothing is accessing it. I don't know if I'm just doing something wrong (which wouldn't surprise me) or if there is a screwed up setting. my CDROM (at installation) was /dev/cdrom and was mounted at /mnt/cdrom. later, the device suddenly changed to /dev/hdc, and I changed the mount point accordingly. help, please.

Assuming that you have your cdrom installed as a master on the second controller its device id is hdc. /dev/cdrom is link that points to /dev/hdc.

Can you post the actual error message when you try to mount your cdrom and your /etc/fstab file.

What distro an version are your running?

Make sure when you try to mount or unmount the cdrom that you don't have an application or console open to the /mnt/cdrom directory.

I have a possibly related issue.

Under MDK9, I can mount and unmount my dvd drive, and either play dvd's or read/exec data cdroms, but am unable to play audio cd's. xmms etc appear to be playing, but no sound ensues. Games/dvd's play sound fine.

Automount is off, and line 4 of my fstab reads...
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660...
...which I suspect is the problem.

Any ideas?

Any ideas? No, fstab has nothing to do with playing audio CDs. Audio CDs can't be mounted (they aren't data CDs, and contain no filesystem); your audio player app takes care of accessing the disk.

Also, you might want to delete your post here and start your own thread for your question. When a single thread ends up with more than one person asking a question, it can get difficult to follow the thread and keep track of who is talking to who if the thread gets starts getting a lot of responses.

Thank you for your reply. :)

You learn a litle every day. Audio cd's are indeed not filesystems...

In the last ten minutes, after a week of stupidity, I learned to connect my cd output cable to my soundcard, not my motherboard. (Onboard sound was jumper-disabled...)

I am officially the dunce of the month.

But thanks to all the helpfull people here who's posts have helped me in the past.

*lurk mode resumed* :)

Thanks!

We'll take a vote and see if we can have that bumped up to a year since it is so well deserved. :p
