Hi, I've just planned to install Red Hat 7.1 on my 2nd HD. I read on the documentation that the kernel version was 2.4.2-2. I want to know whether upgrading to 2.4.10 or newer version is compulsory and if it's so, how can I do it? I know this question may be a a small one to advanced users out there, but can anyone tell me where in the Internet can I find information for upgrading the kernel for novice like me? Thank you so much.

Have done the upgrade to kernel 2.4.18 just resently. Works very well and without problems. If you are upgrading: Make a double installation with your old and new kernel, so you can have the choise from the boot loader. There might be details that might you want to recompile and recompile for a couple of times, to get it 100 % right and all the time you will have the old kernel as a spare. Reaon for my upgrade: Red Hat 7.1 use ipchains as default. Like to try and test out iptables.

This procedure does not take care of the old kernel. The name of the compiled kernel is not 100 % right. But still, it's something..
