totally messed up the 7.2 so tried 8.0 and all is apparently well except for the rpm.
Nothing happens -- not from gui, not from command line. rpm -ivh <package> -- nothing
click on it the folder -- nothing
redhat-package-manager -- nothing
what happened? What did I do _this_ time?

 The only reason I can think of for nothing hapening in the command line is not pressing the enter key. Did you press it? If you did press it, you should get either an error message or some progress hatchmarks.

That's it sharth, I press enter and nothing happens. The cursor just sits there.
and sits
and sits
if never goes back to command line or bash or whatever. It just sits there. Press enter and it drops a line, but that's all.
If I try the Package Manager, then it just dies -- the screen grays out and nothing happens, no error, nothing.
I tried the rpm -rebuilddb that I read here.
nothing
I tried rpm -qa
nothing
I used to have 7.2 and I did not upgrade, but reinstalled. So I don't know what I did.

bad rpm installed is all i can think of. The only thing i could say is try to reinstall rpm (from source, and then replace that with a red hat compiled one I guess.)

I saw that in someone's sig somewhere -- I gotta adopt it.
Don't know why (which makes me nuts), but I rebooted out of disgust and voila! All has returned to normal.
it was that or learn to make, config so I can get apt-rpm going again.
