OK, heres my problem. I am running the pre-sid woody, when woody had xfree86 4.0.1
Then this thing called sid comes along, they take x4.0.1 out of woody, and put it sid. 3.3.6 now is in woody.
Now what i want to know is, if i do a dist-upgrade whilst still having my source as the woody part of the distro tree, and during this process xfree86 and possibly a few other things get downgraded will this break things and cause me major problems?
my system is setup how i like it and i would hate to hose it.
Just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience along these lines.

It will not downgrade your packages unless you explicitly tell it to do so.
It will leave your xfree4.0.1 alone since it is newer than the xfree3.3.6.
Okay... that's what it should do. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
One way to check is to simply do the apt-get update then apt-get dist-upgrade and look to see what it says it will install, remove, etc. Then answer "no" if you don't like it or are unsure because it will ask you for certain if you would like to continue or not.

As ColdPack explained, however it will probably UPGRADE your XFree86 to 4.0.2, as it is in Woody now... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Are you sure? I thought it was still in unstable. Woody and unstable are now two different animals. Stuff moves from unstable/sid to woody/testing.

Funny thing is if you browse the woody tree throught FTP you can see X 4.0.2 and some other updated packages. If you try to apt-get them, they don't show up. Another example is Xchat. If you apt-get it from the woody tree it says 1.4.3 but if you ftp to the woody tree it shows 1.6.2 on there but it won't apt-get it. WEIRD!!!
