I can tell from their names and from Their FAQs that X started it all, and XFree86 is a open-source version of it. Is that all? who 'owns' the term X11? is XFree86 based off X11R6 which came from X? X latest download is X11R6.5, so why does XF86 use X11R6? i just confused

"X11" is owned by the X Consortium (http://www.x.org/). As far as I know, XFree86 is based on X11R6.4, and X11R6.5 is newer than XFree86 4.0. They haven't released one based on R6.5 basically because there's no reason to. What they have right now does the job just fine and is more well-understood by the people who work on XFree86. It's the same reason why the program versions that come with Debian stable are sometimes a couple of versions behind the current - because they're well-tried and tested.
