I decided to try out Debian one day. The easiest would probably be to just download CD images off the net. Well, for some reason it just isn't that simple, you have to download the packages, then convert it, then download and do something else to the image. Well, getting the packakges went fine, it couldn't find some html files but I would probably never use them anyway. But when getting the image there was some sort of error (don't remember what it was http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/tongue.gif) and I'm afraid writing this image to a disc will just be a waste of a good CD. Does anyone know if it will still work? The binary-1-i386.iso or what ever is there and eating up over 620 megs of space. I used winblows to download it if that helps. Also, will I be able to boot from the CD with this image or do I need a special boot disc?

I burned an ISO off of http://www.linuxiso.org and it worked just fine for me.

linuxiso.org is really slow though. At school I tried downloading Slack and we we're averaging under 10kb/s with a T1!

if you use (almost) any of the official mirrors install of the official site, then you mostly can find an iso from there.
(But it really is annoying on Deb's site they dont let you D/L an Iso and make u use all this annoying junk)

That's nonsense. I've downloaded ISOs from Debian servers several times before.

yeah, that linuxisos is very slow. Anyone know anywhere else I can get them? Also, the image or what ever I downloaded is named "Potato" is that the newest version?

if you have the time, you can download the images for about 17 floppies which will set a base system of debian on your machine, set up your internet connection and then use apt-get to bring down the packages that you need from the web... it worked quite well for me. The whole process of downloading the floppies and installing the base system only took two periods of a hockey game last week!

What I don't get is this image crap. I do all this downloading and special converting. Then I use a program to make a checksum, I can then download a 630MB image off the net and do a check sum on that to make sure they are equal. WTF? If the checksums are equal then the files are the same right? Then why did I just waste my time downloading and coverting all this crap when the image file is right there?

I think it's a bandwidth issue, isn't it?
Craig M, am I wrong about this?

You can download the iso's from softseek.com as well - go to the linux section and look for Debian.
I gave up on getting it from the debian site - I spent hours upon hours downloading the dang images, only to find out that their conversion program won't work through a firewall. Nice.

I have a home firewall and was able to do the conversion (what good it did me http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif ), to get it to work for me I had to browse the available directories on the RSYNC server to find the one where the file was located.

Shadoglare, thanks for that softseek link. Just have a couple questions though: Will I be able to boot from CD with this image? And would you recommend downloading the seccond iso as well or just using apt-get to get the stuff I need?

Yup that image is bootable.
Honestly I don't know if the 2nd CD is 100% required or not - I haven't tried installing without it, and I don't know if it would freak out if it wasn't there.
I'd probably suggest getting it "just in case." http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

No, you don't need the second cd.
You'll be just fine with the one.
But, in the long run, it may save download time later if there is an application from that cd you would like to have.
Having stuff on cd makes apt that much faster (if you're stuck with a phone connection like me!). http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Enjoy Debian!

Yep, I think I covered just how much debian's pseudo image system sucks pretty well here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum6/HTML/002799.html). I hate it. I hope it dies. Well, I guess it could be useful if you wanted to make a custom debian ISO, but other than that, it sucks http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I feel your pain. I wasted many hours of downloading time to do all that pseudo image crap. Then I have errors at the end and I have no idea weather it will even work or not http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/mad.gif. I can't figure out why people even put up with it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif.

Here's how to get to the ISOs.

1. Go to http://cdimage.debian.org/

2. "I want to burn/press numerous CDs to sell/give away"

3. "I want to burn/press the Official Debian CDs"

4. "I have access to a computer with a free Internet connection (I don't have to pay for downloading large amounts of data)"

6. "All accessible Internet-connected computers are running other operating systems (OS/2, MacOS etc.)"

That'll give you this URL here:
http://cdimage.debian.org/ftp-mirrors.html

Where you can actually download the ISOs.

But I wanted to give the proper answers to the questions if anybody wanted to actually navigate through them on their own.

We can get through the site navigation fine, its all that image file crap, binaries, pseudo-images, ect that messes us up. It really sucks and I recomend just taking a regular image off one of the mirrors listed above.
