Hello-

Just brought up this memory info on my system and am trying to decypher it:

total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
Mem: 131022848 123953152 7069696 66666496 20692992 58974208
Swap: 263168000 5136384 258031616
MemTotal: 127952 kB
MemFree: 6904 kB
MemShared: 65104 kB
Buffers: 20208 kB
Cached: 57592 kB
SwapTotal: 257000 kB
SwapFree: 251984 kB

Just trying to find out how much storage space I have on my hard drive for programs and web sites. Do I only have 6904 mb after a 12 gig. hard drive? Sheesh. (Please be gentle I'm new to Linux).

Thanks,

Rachael Zona

What you have there is the usage of RAM. So you have 6906kb free of RAM, at that particualr moment of time.

A few command line tools that will be usefull are du and ls

ls -sh will show the contents of the current directory in size (-s) and in a human readable, kb mb gb,(-h) format.

Check man du for various options, I forget them right now, and am at work on a Winders machine.

If you are in X (GUI) try gdiskfree for a Graphical visualization of space left on partions. You will need to have Gnome installed to use it. (and it might be slightly different command, Old age and the memory goes)

Thanks for the help Shad. I'll look into these when I get home. Take care.

df will tell you how much disk space you have left. I think df -a gives you even more thorough info but I may be wrong. At a windows desk right now. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif
