I think save yourself a great deal of anguish and get yourself an external. I switched a month or so ago and picked up an external for £25 which is much the same as an internal. The problem with internal modems is they are mostly software driven and finding drivers and installing them and actually getting the thing to work is a lottery at best.

it depends on how much you value your time :) There are ways to get some (not all!) internal winmodems to work with various distros of linux, i've been told; I tried with an actiontec and an old hayes, and had no luck; after about a month I broke down and bought myself a rather nice USR external. I'm still trying to get the internals to work on another machine; it's good practice and all, but if you want your net stuff, spend the money; you'll thank yourself

Any ISA modem should work in Linux.

Does it have jumpers or strictly PnP? If it doesn't have jumpers, then you should have a dos configuration utility include on the driver diskette/cd or downloadable from Zoom's website that you can use to change the irq and i/o the modem uses.

cat /proc/interrupts

cat /proc/ioports

Will tell you what resources are currently being used of which you can then use the dos configuration utility to disable PnP on the ISA modem and change the irq and i/o to whatever is available on your system.

I believe there is a ISA modem NHF that may help.

it has more jumpers than my mother board. i already had the isa pnp nhf printed out that's what has gotten me this far. linuxconfig
sees it and has it set at i/o 0 0-083f8 irq 4 under isa pnp but when i go to detect the modem it says it is at ttySLTO when it should be at ttyS3 or ttyS4

Com1 - /dev/ttyS0
Com2 - /dev/ttyS1
Com3 - /dev/ttyS2
Com4 - /dev/ttyS3

You should be using /dev/ttyS3.

ln -s /dev/ttyS3 /dev/ttySLT0

The speed can be set in the kppp setup.
