There are enough bugs in both that I switched to mandrake in the hopes that they might catch a few that got past redhat. 7.0's biggest problem that I know of is that they decided to use a development (read-unofficial) version of gcc instead of the official release.

Many programs are ok to use in development stage. They may be marked that way for different reasons. Some may simply be missing features that thier developers decide they need in a full release. Others may have issues that affect what the developers deem a critical user base. For instance, a 3-D graphics program that only works with half the video cards out there. Another reason may be that the program is indeed unstable, but it isn't critical. An example would be a tetris clone that crashes when you score over a million points. Obviously not a major deal as long as it doesn't trash your whole system, so you might be willing to use it.

The problem is, redhat decided to use development software for one of the essential parts of the system, the compiler. You need it to install pretty much everything, yet theirs is unproven? Makes me wonder what other great ideas they had.

Anyways, you can get a patch that's supposed to fix this, but redhat does seem to have more than it's share of problems. Personally I'd stick to mandrake, SuSE, or something else.

I have Mandrake 7.2 but it doesn't seem to like me.... (read my "mandrake 7.2 trouble" post)

Well, I think the cd is not good. I get mandrake 7.0 tomorrow if that one also isn't working I'm gonna get a different distro.

Thanks

I ran rh6.,2 for quite some time on a spare partition and never had any problems with it. I would highly recommend it over the shaky 7.0.
