What is the general opinion of these two office suites? I don't have the applixware office, but I do have Star Office 5.2 and it loads slooooooooooowly, and isn't very good IMO. However Kword seems like a pretty decent word processor, opinions? Would it be worth my while to d/l applixware?

A total newbie.

if all you're doing is word processing then i suggest abiword from www.abisource.com (http://www.abisource.com) .
its a decent word processor that kind of reminds me of MS Works. Not much features yet but i believe it has print previewing and word count now. oh yeah.. and its pretty fast.

Abiword :D I have used StarOffice, and it is slow, but if your eally must have all those tools like presentations and graphs etc., it's probably the best right now. Other than that I've only run a demo of Applixware and it seems not too bad- as long as you will use all of its features I guess.

Abiword is excellent though- small, light and fast. It does everything I need it to and doesn't take long at all to load up. Printing is good and the newer versions have word count etc as stated above by another poster.

KWord's OK., and it will come on in leaps and bounds. KOffice is VERY promising. Either way, if you don't need all the bloatware try Abiword or stick with kWord- they'll do the job right now :)

Abiword is great when I am working and remaining in Linux. When I want to save files to be opened by Windows and Macintosh users, I use StarOffice for all the saving options. It is very slow to launch but not too bad with which to work with 256 MB RAM.

And if you need a spreadsheet, Gnumeric is very much like Excel and it's a good program.

I have heard from a couple of People that Applixware is pretty good (better than SO actually), but it will cost you.

Corel WPO2000 is also pretty good if you run Xfree86 3.3.6. Some stuff got changed in 4 and is a real pain to get WPO working 4.

Yes, I heard Corel WP was a fairly good product.

I wonder if their Linux variant is any good? It is on sale for $19.99 (comes with WP) at Circuit City.... Might have to pick it up (if only I had DSL!) ;)

Theres another very good word processor called Ted on Freshmeat, I prefer it to Abiword and it has a spell checker and it uses rich text format so you can easily transfer documents to windows.

I tried out abiword but I really need footnotes and endnotes. Also, Staroffice's math publishing is amazing.

I once tried Applix and did not think much of it. I ended up writing a thesis using Star Office. Abi is, however, smaller and less cumbersome. Try all of the programs suggested hera and see what you like.
