Ever since I picked up my other cdrw I've only Had Mandrake loaded on my machine. I haven't had Debian loaded back in. (Thought setting up the burner would be hard) So I gave it a second shot today. Well in Mandy I figured how to setup the cdrw, not hard at all. And today loaded Debian. Well the cdrw was not setup at install but using mandy's setup I got it going in two tries. ANd makes copies easier. I can work without supermount. But still haven't gotten kppp to work for user. (Gotta check on that) But the big bugger with my system was setting up the sound. I could get it to work but it wouldn't initialize until after the first login. Tehn subsequent logins it had sound, just not the first login. And in my module.conf file under alias slot-sound-0 es1371 there were two more lines regarding awemix settings. These weren't in mandy. Now I WAS using sndconfig to setup the sound. But after doing some digging realized all I had to do was add the alias line to the aliases file in the modutils dir. Bingo, my old nemsis the sound lag was fixed. Now I'm one step closer to keeping Debian as my main system.

Personally I like Mandy 8.2 but it runs a little slow (A lot compared to Debian) And there's lots that is loaded I don't need. And I'm not thrilled with Mandrakesoft's finanical woes coming back so soon. I also have always had an irking about the non-standard way Mandrake installs software. I've always wanted something more smooth and wanted Debian but sound was a show stopper. Now just have to get the printer configured again and look into that KPPP deal. Think it's just permissions. So we'll see. I've always prefered the wealth of packages inclued with Debian and the speed. I actually like the installer and dselect. But the jury is still out on the debconf stuff. But all it took was stepping back for a few weeks and trying it fresh.

I have flipp flopped with Mandy and Debian for the past year. Now I'm fully converted. Debian is my new main distro. I never could get KPPP to work as user. At first I was using menu entries for pon and poff. Then I found gkdial. Bingo problem solved. My sound, simply using modconf and putting the mod in the kernel, bingo sound prob solved. Copied my cd settings from mandrake, Bingo cdburning working. Didn't install it at install but found cupsomatic and a couple other packages, BINGO my printer is back. For some reason though swat is being a bugger. But just copied my smb.conf file from mandy and bingo, there's my network, and then an install of the LinNeighborhood and that's up. It took me only two days of digging to find all I needed. Last time I had Debian installed it took me a month and never did find these solutions. Oh well. Now if Mandrakesoft does go under my main system is now moved. Only thing I miss right now is the lilo setup in Mandrake. I prefer the graphical login. Gotta check into that. Other than that and the supermount in Mandrake my debian install is now 99% identical to my Mandrake side. I always wanted to get back to Debian. It was the first Linux I learned on and it runs a LOT faster and cleaner than Mandrake.

Was this the first conversation you've ever had with yourself?

What are your system specs? I'm happy with mandrake but the prospect of increased speed is tempting.

AMD K6-2 450
128mb ram
WD 20gig hd
SB 16pci sound card
ATI Rage IIC 4meg video
with the 2.4bf kernel

May not be blazing speed by some standards but I'm satisfied. Does what I want it to do.

And it's networked to my HP Brio Pentium 200 and my IBM Thinkpad 760el (which is next up for the conversion to Debian, cross my fingers for luck)
