What kind of video card do you have?? also what distro and what version of XFree86 are you using? These are all questions that need to be answered.. Also you may have your 3d accelerated card setup properly it just may be a 16 bit card and you need to switch to 16bit graphics in your Xconfig.... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Look at the kernel how-to and the kernel nhf. I'm lazy so you will have to look up the links yourself.

Get the latest Xfree86 4, unless you are stuck on some old vid card that uses Utah-GLX, then stick with 3.3.6.

If you have a SB Live! then get the latest snapshot from http://opensource.creative.com

Check out the NHF HDD Tweak as well. Check out www.namesys.com (http://www.namesys.com) for Reiserfs (journaling fs).

CVS is always an option, but remember, in Linux newer is faster, but newer is less stable.

Seen some here suggest ie. Search 'networking linux' at google, so maybe try 'optimize linux' or 'optimizing linux'.

I wish I could find that damn speed tweaks thread.. *sigh*

The HD speed tweak will help a lot, so will removing some of the VT's on your machine and compiling a custom kernel if you're low on RAM

There are a lot of things you can do in your X config file, I forgot most of them so you'll have to do a search. Getting the latest available XFree stuff and drivers is always helpful.

If only I could find that thread..

I find the tuneup (http://linux.com/tuneup/) site at linux.com quite helpful.

If you select hard drive optimizations when you installed, then you already have done the Hard drive speed tweak. If you selected Reiserfs when you installed, you have that as well. Depending on your video card you wil not see a speed increase going from X 4.0.1 to 4.0.2, other will see big gain in 3D, and a few like the Radeon get 2D support for the first time.
