stevewabc, well one thing that might help us is if you can list some of the errors. I started out 11 months ago with Mandrake 8.1 and now I use Mandrake 9.0. Looking at your list maybe those Sony parts are causing a problem and/or the Zip drive. If possible if you have a LG/Goldstar cdrom, or some other cdrom hook that up and disconnect your Zipdrive and Sony drives and see what happens. I have always tried to keep my system Linux compatible. I have a LG CDRW and a LG DVD/cdrom, nVidia vid card, and a SB Live 5.1 sndcd. Also, did you go to BIOS and turn off PNP?? And also, if you have a winmodem installed that might cause problems. Hopefully you haven't given up on Linux yet.

Later. Pepse.

P.S. I'm from Wisc., about 90 miles from the cities.

I live in Burnsville (so I'm maybe 15 miles south of Minneapolis), BUT I've only been running Linux for 3 months or so now, so I don't know that I'd qualify as an expert :)

I have a Sony as my DVD drive and I haven't had problems with it.

OK, here is the mistake I made when I built my computer earlier this year (and it sounds like you built your own). I had 'won't boot except from the installation CD' problems (now solved). Apparenltly I had my drives cabled up screwy. I still don't see WHY it matters, but I needed to have the right ends of the cables hooked up to the right drives. If you look at an IDE cable, there is a connector on the end and one in the middle of the cable. The one on the end needs to be plugged into hard drive, which should be jumpered as the master. I had it plugged into one of my optical drives, which was jumpered as a slave.

(This is just the sort of problem that makes one feel that their degree in Computer Science doesn't mean they actually KNOW anything :)) (Speaking from experience there)

So my current cable configuration, which actually seems to work:

IDE1-----LiteOn CD/RW-----Hard Drive
IDE2-----Sony DVD-ROM

Hard drive and Sony jumpered as masters, LiteOn as slave.

(And I know that it is a bad idea to have the LiteOn and the HD on the same IDE channel, before anyone tells me that. I have it that way anyway :))

The cables are something to check on, anyway.

(Yes, really Burnsville. But I used to live in St Louis Park, so I'm from AROUND Minneapolis)
