Hi, earlier in the week I posted a question about how to get into KDE from the startup screen that I get, incase I'm somewhere I shouldn't be I'll describe the screen. It has a graph like background w/ a pinkish rectangle at the bottom w/ a mail box, a clock and a graph. I goto the console and type STARTX like I was instructed to do and I get this message:
[root@localhost /root]# startx
Fatal Server error: Server is already active for display 0
IF this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.xo-lock and start again.
Xlib:connection to ":0.0" refused by server.
Xlib: Invalid MIT-Magic_cookie-1 Key giving up.
Xinit: unable to connect to X server.
Init: no such process (errno 3): Server Error.
Thx for your help and sorry for the long post.

Have you tried removing the file it tells you to?

Before I give deleting this file a try, I wonder why it would be necessary to make any modification at all since its a fresh install of Mandrake? Shouldn't I be ready to goto the desktop from the beginning?

If you still had the 'graph like' background, then X is already running and since you used a console to 'startx', you now have 2 instances of X running. Well the first one and now the 2nd is trying to run, hence the message 'Server is already active for display 0' and you have the lock file in /tmp.

You probably need to reconfigure X using xf86cfg or xf86config. Exit from X first with ctrl-alt-backspace.

Try /usr/bin/startkde.
